Yoga As Therapy
Iyengar Yoga Therapy has a strong scientific reputation, with research supporting its benefits for conditions like hypertension, anxiety, and chronic pain management

Iyengar Yoga Therapy is renowned globally for its precision, therapeutic applications, and accessibility for people with various physical conditions. Iyengar Yoga Therapy has a strong scientific reputation, with research supporting its benefits for conditions like hypertension, anxiety, and chronic pain management. Studies have shown that the method’s emphasis on alignment and proper posture can improve mobility and stability in patients with musculoskeletal issues. It’s also endorsed in rehabilitation settings worldwide for its ability to improve overall physical strength and mental clarity, while providing a gentle and accessible path to healing. Its widespread acceptance is a testament to its effectiveness in both medical and wellness circles, making it a respected form of yoga therapy globally.

The approach was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar and his daughter Dr Geeta Iyengar at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute (RIYMI) in Pune, along with the design and use of props. Their approach emphasizes alignment, the use of props and a progressive sequence of postures tailored to individual needs. This makes Iyengar Yoga particularly effective for those recovering from injuries or managing chronic conditions like back pain, arthritis, and respiratory issues.

In the UK, the teacher training syllabus and the IY(UK) Therapy Committee ensure that Iyengar Yoga teachers are progressively trained to help people with a range of needs, beginning with the normal changes a body may undergoes through life, as well as a range of short-term conditions. Through more specialised training, teachers can qualify to help people with more complex and longer-term illnesses. Most Iyengar Yoga Therapy teachers will be working with a more senior mentor for guidance to make sure that each student is supported in the best way possible.

Articles About Yoga As Therapy

The following articles discuss the therapeutic application of yoga for some conditions and detail how to adapt your practice. For trainee teachers, I strongly recommend reading these carefully and practicing accordingly, to appreciate the depth of Dr Geeta Iyengar’s understanding and understand what your students might need.

"I attend Hannah’s group classes regularly and for the last six months have taken online private classes to help with a chronic low back problem. Hannah has a huge depth of knowledge, and her experience, patience and skill in shaping these sessions to work towards a resolution has resulted in massive improvement, pain relief and provided me with skills to manage the causes of this pain and prevent its recurrence. I learn so much from both the group and private classes and recommend Hannah and Iyengar Yoga to everyone."
